William Anthony McGuire
WILLIAM ANTHONY McGUIRE was born in Chicago on July 9, 1885. Although he wrote and directed a few non-musical plays, he was best known for his musicals, especially those produced by Ziegfeld. Three of them – all big hits – opened in 1928: Rosalie, starring Marilyn Miller, The Three Musketeers with Dennis King as the swashbuckling D’Artagnan and Whoopee with Eddie Cantor. McGuire was also librettist and director for eight other Ziegfeld shows, including Show Girl (with a pre-Hollywood Ruby Keeler, plus a Gershwin score) and Smiles (starring Marilyn Miller and Fred and Adele Astaire with a Youmans score). It should come as no surprise that McGuire is also the author the MGM films The Great Ziegfeld and Ziegfeld Girl.
